Says Steve Buckley of The Athletic:
This is probably going to ruin Curt Schilling’s day, but I have every intention of voting for the former Red Sox World Series hero to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
The problem with my selection is that it doesn’t square with the narrative Schilling is spewing. He posted a nearly 1,500-word diatribe on Facebook last weekend to announce, among other things, “I am not getting in.” He explained his conclusion: “Many of the writers have openly stated their hatred of my support of President Trump.”
To further make his case, Schilling points out that “something like 80+% of the sports media is liberal,” which means, I guess, there’s a lefty voting bloc in the press box that’s going to prevent Schilling, a righty both on the mound and on the stump, from being enshrined in Cooperstown.
But we have a math problem here, as it appears many of those so-called liberals in the press box are reaching across the aisle to support Schilling’s candidacy. Even if we accept his contention that “80+% of the sports media is liberal,” the fact is that Schilling very nearly was elected to the Hall of Fame last year. Of the 397 ballots submitted by voting members of the Baseball Writers Association of America, Schilling was named on 278 of them, mine included.
