WILL EAGLES’ BUST NO. 1 PICK SMITH SURVIVE CUTDOWN SATURDAY?

By Sarah Berkowitz

Eagles’ bust 2014 No. 1 pick Marcus Smith was upbeat last night:

“I know that stopping the run is going to be a big thing [in Jim Schwartz’s defense] when it comes to rushing the passer,” Smith said following last night’s 14-6 Eagles win over the Jets in the preseason finale at Lincoln Financial Field. “You have to stop the run first. If I can be good at that then sacks will be able to come. That’s what I want to do. I want to be a 10-plus sack guy.”

Reaching double-digit sacks is quite the ambitious aspiration for a player who spent the spring and summer locked in a tightly contested roster battle with Steven Means and has only registered 1.5 sacks in limited playing time since being chosen with the No. 26 overall pick out of Louisville in 2014.
