WHAT’S WITH THE MASSIVE OVERREACTION TO NFL NEW HELMET RULE?

So says Ben Volin of the Boston Globe:

Everybody please take a deep breath. In through your nose, pause, and out through your mouth.

Repeat after me: It’s going to be OK. The new helmet rule will not ruin the NFL.

This new penalty, making it a personal foul and possible ejection for any player to initiate contact with his helmet, is predictably causing an uproar through two weeks of the preseason.

Seemingly mundane tackles have turned into 15-yard penalties, and no one seems to know how or why. Coaches and players are upset that the rule as applied now isn’t what they were told it would be back in May.

“I think it’s really gray right now,” Broncos head coach Vance Joseph said this week.

“It’s going to cost people some jobs,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said.

“Will be flag football soon,” 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman tweeted:
