A West Catholic basketball star has been identified as one of the 49 people killed in the Sunday morning shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.
The death of Akyra Murray, 18, a star basketball player who signed a national letter of intent to attend Mercyhurst College on a full athletic scholarship (above right), was reported by her West Philly high school and her father.
“She just graduated last week,” her father Albert Murray said in a telephone interview. “She was kind, helpful. She helped everybody.”
“West Catholic Prep is terribly saddened to report that Akyra Murray ’16 has been confirmed as a victim in the mass shooting in Orlando this weekend,'” the school said in a statement. “A recent graduate, Akyra was a superstar who was a leader amongst her classmates and teammates. She was a solid student in the classroom and a 1,000 point scorer on the Lady Burrs basketball team …”
