UNION TOP D. C. UNITED 2-1 IN U. S. OPEN CUP PLAY

Eric Ayuk Mbu tied it up early in the second half, and Fabinho (above) netted the game-winner in the 79th minute as the Union rallied from a first-half deficit to earn a 2-1 victory over D.C. United Tuesday night at PPL Park in the U.S. Open Cup.

With the win, the Union advanced to the tournament quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of tonight’s New York Red Bulls-New York Cosmos match.

Coming on in the 67th minute for Philly, Fabinho beat United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra, who was playing in place of regular starter Bill Hamid, for the go-ahead goal in the 79th. Ayuk leveled the game in the 56th minute off a cross from Sheanon Williams to set up Fabinho’s winner.

Jairo Arrieta scored the only goal of the game for United, a one-timer in the 27th. After going down a score, Markus Halsti gave United life with a blast in the 83rd that caromed off the crossbar.

The match was delayed in the 15th minute when thunder and driving rain forced players into the locker rooms for 45 minutes.

When the sides reemerged, the Union quickly went down a man when C.J. Sapong was given a red card in the 24th minute.
