JUST IN: EAGLE ERTZ’ GROIN SURGERY, MAY MISS START OF SEASON!

By Barbara Harrison

The news coach Chip Kelly just announced came like a bolt from the blue:

Eagles tight end Zach Ertz will miss the entire preseason with a core body injury, Kelly announced on Friday.

Ertz could miss up to six weeks, leaving his status for the team’s Week 1 game against Atlanta in question.

Ertz entered camp with the injury, but has been in-and-out of practice since Sunday, when he went down hard during the team’s open practice at Lincoln Financial Field.

“We wanted to get it taken care of now,” Kelly said, “so we didn’t have to shut him down later.”

Ertz missing the preseason likely increases the team’s chances of keeping four tight-ends on the roster. Kelly mentioned that tight end Eric Tomlinson has been a standout at camp so far.

Ertz is expected to be a major part of the team’s offense this season, and was having an outstanding training camp before the injury.

Whether Ertz plays in Week 1 will now be the question surrounding the tight end until he is back on the field. Last season center Jason Kelce missed five weeks with a core injury.

The Eagles play the Falcons on Sept. 14, which is just over four weeks away.
