Don’t look now but Villanova coach Jay Wright may be doing his best job ever since he came to the Main Line in 2001.
The Wildcats were a 33-3 team last season, but lost three of their top four in minutes played: Dylan Ennis (transfer) and Darrun Hilliard and JayVaughn Pinkston (graduation).
That figured to necessitate a step back. There hasn’t been one. ‘Nova is 22-3, ranked No. 1 in every poll and has only lost once (in overtime) since before Christmas.
There is some skepticism about this team as an NCAA tournament favorite — but this is a wide-open field with no looming heavyweight like Duke or Kentucky in past years — but that doesn’t diminish the job Wright has done maintaining a high level of play.
