Memo to Fran Dunphy’s Temple Owls:
It’s hard to win a game if you shoot 24.6 percent from the field and score less than 40 points.
Especially in the ultra-competitive American Athletic Conference.
James Woodard scored 16 points and Rashad Smith added 13 points and 13 rebounds as Tulsa rolled over Temple, 55-39 Sunday.
Tulsa (19-7, 12-2 American) now has won 14 of its last 16 games and is 11-3 at home. The Golden Hurricane is a half-game behind SMU (13-2) and plays the Mustangs March 8.
Tulsa led by four at the break, 26-22, but opened the second half on a 19-4 run over the first 12 minutes of the second half.
Temple (19-9, 10-5) got a jumper from Jaylen Bond almost a minute into the period and he added a layup four minutes later. Will Cummings (photo above) ended the eight-minute drought with a pair of free throws with 6:52 left to make it 45-28.
Cummings finished with 15 points for the Owls, who were 14 of 57 from the field (24.6 percent) and just 1 of 14 from distance.
