Temple doubled down on its Dec. 29 upset win over nationally ranked Cincinnati in a thriller on North Broad St. Saturday.
Jaylen Bond scored on a putback with 20.2 seconds left in the second overtime and Temple defeated Cincinnati 67-65.
Cincinnati’s Gary Clark stripped the ball from Josh Brown as he went up for a shot in the lane and the ball was tipped out to Obi Enechionyia on the left wing. Enechionyia just got off a shot that grazed the rim as the shot clock expired. The ball dropped into Bond’s hands for the easy putback.
Troy Caupain then drove the lane for the Bearcats but his pass went into the backcourt for a turnover with 6.5 seconds left. Temple nearly lost the ball on the inbounds play before Brown was fouled with 1.2 seconds left. He missed both free throws but the Bearcats’ late heave wasn’t close.
Quenton DeCosey had 22 points but missed a runner in the lane at the end of regulation and Devin Coleman added 15, all on 3s, for Temple (9-7, 4-2 American), which won at Cincinnati 77-70 on Dec. 29 when the Bearcats were ranked.
Octavius Ellis and Caupain, who was scoreless in the first half and missed in the lane at the end of the first overtime, finished with 14 each for Cincinnati (13-6, 3-3), which was 1 of 18 from 3-point range and lost its fourth game by two points. Clark had 12 points and 14 rebounds.
