IT’S JULY 31: EAGLES BROOKS, MATHEWS STILL OUT — TIME TO PANIC?

By Michael Donovan

It’s only July 31, but Eagles guard Brandon Brooks and running back Ryan Mathews (above) still can’t practice.

Is that just caution on the part of coach Doug Pederson or is it time to panic?

Originally they were both listed as day to day, Pederson said not to expect to see either player until the end of this week. And that’s probably at the earliest.

“We’ll see,” Pederson said. “We get a little break coming up, the players are off, Tuesday. After that we’ll see, hopefully (they’ll be back) the latter part of the week.”

Brooks, 6-5, 335, the team’s key free agent addition, has yet to practice. He did the conditioning test Thursday morning, but this was the fourth full practice he has missed.

Mathews, expected to be the team’s featured back this season, is still on the active/NFI (non-football injury) list. He injured the ankle working out on his own before camp started. Today was also his fourth missed practice.
