Sixers All-Star center Joel Embiid is spending the summer getting into top shape for the 2019-20 season.
He’ll be leaner and meaner.
Sixers part owner Michael Rubin appeared on The Bill Simmons Podcast and shared that Jojo has completely removed Krispy Kreme Doughnuts from his life to get into better shape.
Rubin also shared how their devastating loss in the 2019 playoffs affected him badly. Thus, he believes Embiid is on a mission this upcoming 2019-20 season.
Pundits, including Simmons, have preached that Embiid needs to get into better shape if he intends to maintain his health and reach another level as a superstar. Likewise, Simmons has gone on record saying Embiid’s lack of conditioning ultimately led to Philly’s downfall in the 2019 playoffs.
The Sixers lost in seven games in the Eastern Conference Semifinals to the eventual champion Toronto Raptors on a heartbreaking, buzzer-beating, series-clinching, game-winner that needed four bounces to go in courtesy of Kawhi Leonard.
Embiid was crying hard following the devastating defeat. It appears he’s using that loss as fuel to fire him up and work even harder this summer to prepare him for next season.
Many regard this upcoming season as anybody’s to take. Philly is once again one of the favorites to rule the East. The Sixers lost Jimmy Butler and JJ Redick to free agency, but retooled by adding veteran big man Al Horford and 2-guard Josh Richardson. Likewise, they were also able to retain the services of Tobias Harris.
