SERENA OUT OF FRENCH OPEN WITH AN ACHILLES INJURY

By Jerry Wein

Serena Williams’s latest bid to tie the all-time Grand Slam singles title record is over.

The 39-year-old pulled out of the French Open ahead of her second-round match today in Paris, citing an Achilles’ tendon injury.

Williams, who also pulled out of a tuneup tournament in Rome ahead of the French Open, said in a news conference that she is struggling to walk and will need at least 4-6 weeks of rehab. She likely injured the tendon during her semifinal match against Victoria Azarenka at the U.S. Open earlier this month.

Williams has 23 major tournament titles, one short of Margaret Court’s record, including three at the French Open.
