Russo started 26 games in his Temple career and was the starter for the first three games in 2020 before injuries hindered his progress. The Owls fell to 1-6 this season after losing five straight games.
Coach Rod Carey mentioned that he wanted to put his best players on the field this season. He called Russo one of the team leaders as the starting quarterback. With Russo now in the transfer portal, Carey will look at some of his younger players to step up.
“We’re trying to put both those kids in a situation where they’re doing the most things that they have the most reps in from practice and now from a game and repeat and repeat and repeat,” he said. “And just keep doing it with them so that they have great comfort with that. And that’s the number one thing you’re trying to do. You’re not trying to move the pieces of the puzzle or do too many new things there. You’re just trying to repeat the things that they’ve done.”
