PHILS SKIPPER GIRARDI AIN’T WARM AND FUZZY, SAYS NY POST WRITER!

Says Joel Sherman:

But those traits that make Joe Girardi a terrific game manager — and he is a terrific game manager — also make him hard to embrace.

There is admiration, but not adoration. He projects porcupine too often. He will tear up a few times a year, often over someone with whom he had ties and now is retiring or being waived or has passed away.

Those are momentary glimpses into his humanity, unless you have seen him — for example — throw pitch after pitch to his son Dante in an empty stadium.

Too frequently as Yankees manager, he obfuscated even over trivial matters, stonewalled the truth, wore tension like cologne and might have been the smartest guy in the room, but sure did nothing to avoid the condescension and arrogance associated with that.

He offered brevity rather than insight — and I know there is insight because working together for a few months at MLB Network I learned more baseball from him than covering him for 10 years as Yankees manager.
