PHILS JOSE ALVARADO TURNED REDS LIGHTS OUT: 3 K’S IN 8TH!

By Gwyn Powers

José Alvarado struck out three in the eighth inning against the Reds.

It looked like Alvarado was going to set up for Craig Kimbrel, but after the Phillies scored three times in the top of the ninth to make it a six-run game, Connor Brogdon finished up.

In spite of a misstep in his previous appearance, Alvarado has been far and away the most impressive of Philadelphia’s relievers; he has a 1.42 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Since he’s their top lefty, the Phillies don’t want to turn him into a full-time closer. Still, he likely will wind up with some saves if he keeps throwing like this.
