PHILS ALVARADO STARTED 9TH SHAKY, THEN SHUT DOOR ON PADS!

By Sam Bush

José Alvarado slammed the door on the Padres in the ninth, working a scoreless inning to preserve a two-run advantage and earn his seventh save of the season.

With the Phillies clinging to a two-run lead, Craig Kimbrel was called upon to work the eighth inning with a slew of right-handed hitters due up for the Padres.

That left Alvarado to clean up the ninth.

He made things interesting by walking Garrett Cooper and Gary Sanchez to start the inning — bringing the winning run to the plate — but battled back to get Matthew Batten on a fielder’s choice and then Luis Campusano and Ha-Seong Kim each on swinging-third strikes.

On the season, the 28-year-old southpaw now boasts a stellar 1.67 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 50/15 K/BB ratio over 32 1/3 innings.
