PHILLIES OFF-SEASON GRADES OUT AS AN A-MINUS!

Says Jim Bowden on The Athletic:

Trades: Traded INF Vimael Machin to Athletics for cash considerations

Free Agents: RHP Zack Wheeler, 5 years/$118 million; SS Didi Gregorius, 1 year/$14 million

Rule 5: INF Vimael Machin from Cubs

Hires: Manager Joe Girardi

Joe Girardi was an excellent choice for the Phillies’ new skipper, and they followed that by quickly signing one of the top five free-agent pitchers in Zack Wheeler.

Putting Wheeler at the top of their rotation with Aaron Nola and Jake Arrieta filled the Phils’ biggest need this offseason.

Their next move was another shrewd one: they were able to get shortstop Didi Gregorius to agree to a one-year pillow deal for $14 million — a move that shocked and disappointed the Yankees, who were hoping to bring him back.

Gregorius improves them defensively at shortstop and also balances their lineup with a much-needed left-handed bat.

The Phillies opened up an everyday position for infielder Scott Kingery by allowing both Maikel Franco and César Hernández to depart.

While they weren’t able to improve their bullpen, they are hoping Girardi’s ability to manage a pen will be a difference-maker.
