PHILLIES’ EICKHOFF GETS THE BALL IN GAME 2 AGAINST REDS!

By Lewis Gould

Cincinnati left-hander Brandon Finnegan faces Phillies right-hander Jerad Eickhoff tonight at Great American Park in Cincy.

Finnegan pitched 172 innings in 2016, his first full season as a starter. He hopes to pitch deeper into games this year; he had one complete game last year.

“He had a solid season last year, but there is so much room for improvement,” Reds manager Bryan Price told MLB.com. “He goes as his command goes. He has room to improve the command and pitch quality of his three pitches. When they all show up — the fastball, slider and changeup — he can be extremely effective both as a ground-ball pitcher and a strikeout pitcher. Where he gets in trouble is when his pitch count goes up early in the game and he’s a little erratic with overall command. He will continue to work on his delivery and the quality of his pitches because he competes like crazy.”

Eickhoff went 11-14 with a 3.65 ERA in 33 starts last season, also his first full year in the big leagues.
