The Phillies have rewarded 32-year-old Andres Blanco for a nice 2016 with a 2017 contract.
Blanco, who will sign a one-year, $3 million contract, hit .274 with 12 home runs, 49 RBIs and a .795 OPS in 523 plate appearances over the past three seasons with the Phillies.
To make room for Blanco on the 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher David Rollins was designated for assignment.
Blanco has been a popular presence in the Phillies’ clubhouse the past three seasons. Manager Pete Mackanin has said Blanco is the best utility man he has had in the majors.
The Phils also claimed third baseman Richie Shaffer off waivers from the Mariners and released right-hander Phil Klein, allowing him to pursue a playing opportunity in Asia.
Shaffer is likely to be Triple-A Lehigh Valley’s third baseman next season. Shaffer, 25, was designated for assignment by Seattle on Dec. 7 after being acquired from Tampa Bay in a five-player trade on Nov. 18. He hit .250 with one home run and four RBIs in 48 at-bats last season with the Rays.
