NAVY LETTING PHILS RULE 5-ER NOAH SONG REPORT TODAY!

By Jackie Ryan

Phillies RHP prospect Noah Song will report to spring training today after being transferred by the Navy from active duty to selective reserves.

Song, a former Red Sox prospect taken by the Phillies in the Rule 5 Draft, will continue serving in the Navy, while also being permitted to play pro baseball.

He was a first-round talent in the 2019 MLB Draft, but his commitment to the Navy dropped him to the fourth round. He went on to pitch 17 professional innings that season, but he wasn’t worked in a game in three years since.

Now, as a Rule 5 pick, he’ll have to stick in the majors this season or get returned to the Red Sox.

It seems obvious that he’s going to need at least one full year in the minors before he’s ready to contribute.

The Phillies figure to have an especially difficult time committing a roster spot to him.
