NATS TO THEIR FANS: WE HAVE OFFICIALLY GIVEN UP FOR 2018!

By Sam Bush

The Washington Nationals yesterday sent a chilling message to their legions of fans who expected them to contend for the World Series this year:

We give up!

After 125 games, the Nationals traded second baseman Daniel Murphy (above) to the Chicago Cubs and first baseman Matt Adams to the St. Louis Cardinals, helping two of the teams that have ended their playoff dreams in recent years.

In exchange for Murphy, 33, the Nationals received the Class A infielder Andruw Monasterio from the Cubs and a player to be named or cash. In exchange for Adams, 29, Washington received cash from the Cardinals. The team, however, will not trade its cornerstone outfielder, Bryce Harper, who was pulled back from waivers after a claim by the Los Angeles Dodgers, who could not work out a deal with Washington.

The Nationals were just 62-63 at the start of play yesterday and were seven and a half games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East. They had a record of 9-10 this month, and they lost, 12-1, to the last-place Miami Marlins on Sunday.
