MAY 31, 1983: SIXERS SWEEP LAKERS TO WIN THEIR LAST NBA TITLE!

By Teddy Brenner

With their 115-108 defeat of the Los Angeles Lakers, the defending champions, the 76ers won the NBA title with a sweep of the four-of-seven-game series.

Only three other teams in history had accomplished that feat. Further, the 76ers set a record by finishing the 1983 playoffs with a 12-1 record in post-season play, the best mark ever.

It was the first title for Sixers title since 1967. The 76ers had reached the finals last season and in 1980, and both times they lost to the Lakers in six games.

Julius Erving, who scored 7 critical points in the final two minutes of the game, said:

”We did it the long way, and we did it the hard way. But we did it the best way.”
