GREINKE GIVES YOUNG PHILLIES BATS PROPS AFTER GETTING SHELLED!

By Sam Bush

The Dodgers had just beaten the Phillies 10-8 in a slug-fest at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday, and one of the best pitchers in baseball had escaped with his 11th win even though he had been shelled for six runs in six innings.

After the game, Zack Greinke told the Associated Press, “Their top five in the order are up there with best top five we have to face and you probably don’t hear people say that. It’s a tough top three.”

The top three batters are Cesar Hernandez (above), Odubel Herrera and Maikel Franco. Ryan Howard – who had a two-run single in the first inning – and Domonic Brown, who finished the outburst with a three-run homer, were hitting 4-5.

Despite the disappointment of rocking one of the best pitchers in baseball and not coming away with the win, there was plenty of positive vibes for the just-finished 4-3 homestand and 13-5 record since the All-Star break.

“The guys didn’t quit, they’ve scored 17 runs in three games,” said manager Pete Mackanin. “It’s fun for me to watch these guys hit. They’re playing as a team and they’re putting hits together. It’s encouraging.”

Brown, who also contributed an RBI single off Greinke in the third, is coming around in what has been perceived as his last chance to establish himself in the organization.

The right fielder is hitting .367 with three home runs and 13 RBIs in the last 14 games. His average is up to .252.

“I’m just playing, just playing with confidence, that’s it,” said Brown. “We’re just playing good baseball. We’re all running to the bat rack and having a lot of fun.

“Early on we weren’t hitting mistakes and we are now. Nobody’s perfect. You leave the ball up against our ball team, you’re going to get hurt. That’s how we look at things now and we’re having a lot of fun as I keep saying.”

Brown said the young team is just starting to feel comfortable around each other.

“Once you get a certain amount of at-bats playing the game, like Cesar, you start playing well,” said Brown. “We have a lot of talent in here. This reminds me of when I first got called up (in 2010). Even when we’re down, we’re never defeated.”
