One of the curiosities of the NFL salary cap is how little guaranteed money is factored into most contracts.
Shady McCoy, for instance, was only guaranteed $1 million in 2016 when he was with the Eagles.
But now that he is with the Buffalo Bills, after last week’s trade, bingo!
According to McCoy’s agent Drew Rosenhaus, as told to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McCoy has signed a new deal with the Buffalo Bills that will land him a whopping $26.5 million guaranteed, with the total value of the deal coming to $40 million over five seasons.
McCoy was scheduled to make $9.75 million next season, although his cap hit was just over $11 million. Of the three years McCoy had remaining on his contract with the Eagles, only $1 million was fully guaranteed.
Here are the cap numbers for McCoy, via ProFootball Talk.
2015: $5.5 million
2016: $7.675 million
2017: $8.875 million
2018: $8.95 million
2019: $9.05 million
So by agreeing to move to Buffalo, McCoy lands an extra $25.5 million in guaranteed money.
