CAN THIS EX-HEALTHCARE EXEC PADDLE THE FLYERS BACK TO LIFE?

By Jenny Masters

Former Independence Health Group head Daniel J. Hilferty has been named CEO of the Flyers parent company Comcast Spectacor.

Which begs the question:

Has Comcast decided that the only way to resurrect the awful Flyers is to bring in a healthcare exec to paddle them back to life?

Hilferty led the parent of Independence Blue Cross for 10 years before stepping down at the end of 2020.

He recently oversaw Philadelphia’s successful bid to be a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and continues to serve as chair of Philadelphia Soccer 2026.

Hilftery begins the role with the Flyers in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division following a disappointing 25-46-11 season last year.

The team is averaging 17,214 fans per game this year, or 88.1% of capacity, according to Hockey-Reference.com.

That ranks near the bottom of all NHL teams this season.
