Opening day for the Phillies’ 2015 season is only five days away, and already baseball nuts are thinking about firing managers!
No way Ryne Sandberg (photo above) should take the hit for what’s gone on in Philly, thanks to the head-in-the-sand attitude of general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., who actually thought that the Phils had a chance to compete in 2014!
And by the way, it isn’t likely to get better any time soon. There may have been growing pains Sandberg’s first full season managing, but he had a tough lot with aging, unhappy veterans on a non-contender.
Things looks even worse this year, with no semblance of a rotation after ace Cole Hamels, a lineup full of questions, a lack of great strengths all around (except at closer, where they have two very good ones) and early word of clubhouse grumbling. Charlie Manuel, you were the lucky one.
Rather than jettison Ryno, the Phillies should get rid of Amaro, who has had more than six years to take this team from the penthouse to the outhouse of the National League.
