None other than the respected Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports writes that the Sixers are set to workout both Australian point guard Dante Exum and Oklahoma State product Marcus Smart (photo above) on Sunday. Spears notes that the two workouts will take place separately, and not together.
What the Sixers end up thinking of Exum and Smart could end up determining their entire plan for this upcoming Thursday night.
With the news of Kansas center Joel Embiid’s foot injury, the Sixers now face the very real possibility of taking Exum at No. 3, with both Kansas forward Andrew Wiggins and Duke forward Jabari Parker expected to go No. 1 and No. 2 overall in some order.
Whether or not the Sixers come away impressed with Exum could be the difference between taking the point guard, or potentially having to reach for a prospect they like better.
The workout for Smart is equally, if not more, important.
The Sixers have are reportedly very interested in Smart, who is much more of a pure point guard than Exum is. Smart, who averaged 18 points, 4.8 assists and 5.9 rebounds last season, has by all accounts been very impressive in all of his private workouts with other teams.
The drafting of Smart and potentially trading assets to get him — would almost certainly punch point guard Michael Carter-Williams’ ticket out of town.
Making the workouts on Sunday very, very important ones — and potentially the final piece to the puzzle for the Sixers and their plans on Thursday.
