Maybe it’s just me, but genius Eagles’ coach Doug Pederson and his glove puppet offensive coordinator Frank Reich seem to have given up on running back Wendell Smallwood!
The second-year back has the fewest carries of the Eagles’ three-back committee after two games.
Smallwood has just seven total carries.
After opening the season with road games against the Redskins and Chiefs, Smallwood has just eight total rushing yards, averaging slightly more than one yard per carry.
Against the Chiefs, Smallwood carried the ball once in the second quarter (he lost two yards), once in the third (gain of eight) and once in the fourth (another minus-two). His final carry in the fourth, with 10:09 left to play, happened to be the final carry for any Eagles running back in the game.
“You look at Wendell and say, well, he had however many rushes and his average was down,” Reich said Tuesday. “You need to evaluate that over the long haul, and there will be some weeks hopefully that he’ll get 12 or 14 carries.”
