Pirates first baseman Will Craig started one of the strangest run-down plays in baseball history in yesterday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
In the top of the third inning — with two outs and a runner on second base — the Cubs’ Javier Báez hit a routine ground ball to third base. Pirates third baseman Erik Gonzalez threw wide to first, pulling Craig off the base; Craig, instead of merely retreating to the bag to end the inning, made the fateful decision to tag Báez. That tag never came:
My favorite part about this play is Baez calling Contreras safe at home, still having to run to first base to ensure Contreras actually is safe at home since there are 2 outs https://t.co/JzP22Rk4R4
