Eagles linebacker Connor Barwin is the center of the defense.

Each week throughout the season, ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) determines which teams are ranked too high, which too low, and why.

Here’s the Worldwide Leader’s take on the Eagles:

FPI Rank: 6

Power Rankings rank: 22

Reason they’re underrated: Defense is overlooked.

Admittedly, FPI is too high on the Eagles, but even after a disappointing start, the Birds are not the 11th-worst team in the league. The Eagles’ offense has struggled (25th in offensive EPA per game), but FPI expects it to be closer to average going forward because of Chip Kelly’s track record of success.

The real reason the Eagles rank so high in FPI, though, is because of their defense, which is often overlooked because of the moves they made on offense in the offseason. Philly’s defense is adding about 5.5 points per game to its net scoring margin (fourth in the NFL) and has been the top unit (in terms of EPA per game) at stopping the run. Going forward, FPI projects that the Eagles will be the second-best defense in the NFL, behind the Jets.
