Eagles training camp opens for rookies in six days.

So, Doug Pederson, how will this year’s edition differ your rookie season last year?

“You saw us split the field this spring,” coach Pederson said after June mini-camp, as related by NJ.com. “Which was new. and it helps develop our younger guys, and it helps develop our younger coaches. The coaching staffs are split, too.You saw us split the field this spring, which was new. and it helps develop our younger guys, and it helps develop our younger coaches. The coaching staffs are split, too.

“So, like the Eugene Chungs, Press Taylor, Duno Vanesso, Phillip Daniels, they can go work with the 2’s and 3’s while the actual position coaches can stay with the 1’s, with their guys. The design there is create the competition, fun, energy, but at the same time develop.”

The genesis of this new practice format came to Pederson in 2016, during his rookie season as a head coach.

“I didn’t until I got into the regular season, actually, and then I created, about halfway through the year I started creating these competitions on Wednesdays and Thursdays,” Pederson explained. “Really in season, it’s not so much competition. Well, it is competition. It’s working on a situation in football that is non-related to the gameplan that week offensively or defensively.

“Just being able to work a third-down scenario or a red-zone scenario during the regular season, because those are critical areas that we need to get better at as a team. Third-down needs to get better on offense, we gotta get better in red zone. So my emphasis and focus was to do that, and it just carried over into the spring.”
