EAGLES BEWARE! HERE’S WHY THEY COULD LOSE TO THE CHARGERS!

By Peter Gleason

The 2-1 Eagles are in L. A. Sunday for a 4 p.m. game against the 0-3 Chargers, and if the Birds aren’t careful they could fall into a trap.

Here’s why:

No Fletcher Cox (above). The best player on his team, Cox screamed an expletive when he limped off the field Sunday, never to return – and L.A.’s blockers say “hallelujah” that the calf injury apparently will sideline Cox this week. Cox is an All-Pro, a game-wrecker, at defensive tackle. Ox-strong linemate Timmy Jernigan is playing well and will cause L.A. some problems – but Jernigan alone is far more manageable than Cox and Jernigan.

Melvin Ingram makes plays. The L.A. end is among the NFL leaders in sacks (5) and tackles for loss (5.5). Though both Eagles tackles are above average, expect Ingram to create pressure. L.A.’s stunt game is making strides, and fellow ends Joey Bosa and Chris McCain are disruptive as well.

Eagles Fly Zone. In the category “NFL Unit Hit Hardest By Injury,” the Eagles’ secondary is a contender. Philly used a fifth cornerback and a fifth safety last week. Veteran safety Malcolm Jenkins provides know-how and safety Rodney McLeod rejoined the lineup Wednesday, but the defenders here are still getting on the same page.

Streaky Wentz. Though he has many good traits – arm strength, mental processing, toughness, escape skills – second-year quarterback Carson Wentz is still developing as a passer. Too-hot passes and sailed throws can result from his elbow-centric inverted-W delivery that’s akin to that of former Padres ace Jake Peavy (and former SDSU ace Stephen Stasburg of the MLBNationals). High throws and fumbles have slowed Wentz and could allow L.A.’s defense to collect turnovers after failing to get one in both home games to date.

Keenan Allen Redux. L.A.’s top receiver has made gains this month in his comeback from reconstructive knee surgery. Allen had a sparkling NFL debut against the Eagles in Philly four years ago. In the rematch, give him at least five catches.
