Eagles training camp doesn’t even begin for another 14 days — July 28 at NovaCare — but it’s never too early to scope out fantasy prospects.
A surprising name has emerged as a top option at the running back position: Ryan Mathews.
The NFL Network’s panel of analysts ranked the top players heading into the 2016 season, and here’s what they had to say about the Eagles’ running back, who was ranked No. 41 out of the top-50 fantasy football players:
I like him. Even when he was in San Diego, I watched him play. He can play all three downs. He is a physical runner. He is a bruiser; he is fast, and he is consistent. I’ve always appreciated his game.
I like the fact that Ryan Mathews if you look at what Doug Pederson did in Kansas City and how he utilized all of those backs catching the ball out of the backfield. I think they are going to do a lot of that in Philly with Ryan [Mathews]. He’s definitely talented enough to do it.
Who is not there anymore? DeMarco Murray. They have Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, but it looks like he will be the closest thing to a feature running back that Philadelphia has. Pederson likes to use the running backs, look at Jamaal Charles during his time in Kansas City.
Mathews rushed for 539 yards and six touchdowns on 106 carries i his first season with the Eagles in 2015.
