DID ‘OUTSIDE FACTIONS’ KEEP PHILS LEGEND DICK ALLEN OUT OF HOF?

By Art Beitchman

One more Golden Era Hall of Fame committee failed to act last Sunday and enshrine former Phillies slugger Dick Allen.

Allen richly deserved induction after a long distinguished career with the Phillies, Cardinals, Dodgers, White Sox, for whom he won the American League M.VP for in 1972.

Ironically, former Phil and Allen teammate Bill White expressed concerns that “outside factions” did what they could to keep Allen out!

Why would they sabotage this great player?

It has subsequently come out that one of those voices is Jerry Reinsdorf, owner of the Chicago White Sox who said of Allen in the past that:

“Allen had kind of a checkered career, I wouldn’t have voted for him, he only had 6 good seasons.”

Not much gratitude from an owner that Allen won an MVP for the White Sox franchise in 1972.
