Little by little, Temple is making its case as the second-best Big 5 team — after Villanova, naturally.
The Owls improved to 6-3 as Will Cummings scored 22 points, sinking 15 of 17 from the free throw line, to lead them past Towson 76-64 on Wednesday night.
Jaylen Bond put Temple ahead for good late in the first half with back-to-back buckets during an 11-4 run capped by 3-pointers from Cummings and Quenton DeCosey to make it 25-17 just before the break. The Owls protected the lead the rest of the game.
DeCosey finished with 16 points, Daniel Dingle added 11 and Bond had 10 plus nine rebounds for Temple, which has won five straight on its home court.
Towson (7-3) closed to within two on a Byron Hawkins 3-pointer to open the second half but Temple responded with an 8-1 run and held off the Tigers down the stretch.
Alex Gavrilovic led Towson with 17 points and seven rebounds, Four McGlynn contributed 20 points and John Davis had 11 plus 14 rebounds.
