CB Byron Maxwell, Eagles
Contract Terms: 6 years, $63 million ($25.5 million guaranteed)
By Sam Bush
There has been a lot of talk on Philly radio and in real life that we don;t really know how good Byron Maxwell is.
Yes,he was part of Seattle’s Legion of Doom, but there were so many other studs in the secondary that Maxwell’s talent couldn’t be properly assessed.
And that may be correct. Only time will tell.
But one thing is for sure:
The Eagles’ deal with Maxwell is crafted so that his contract won’t be an impediment to other signings.
When your defensive unit totals 49 sacks and you still give up 30 touchdown passes, changes will be coming.
The Eagles opened up their wallets and gave Maxwell a hefty deal that will keep him in Philly for a number of years.
But was it a wise move financially? It is because it is a back-loaded deal where the biggest cap hits take place over the final four years of the contract.
Maxwell has started just 17 games in four seasons but all of them came within the past two seasons. Over the next two year Chip Kelly can really determine if he has a rising star or a performer that was surrounded by talented teammates the previous four years.
