The Union are in the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Open Cup for the fourth time in five years, thanks to yesterday’s 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls in Chester.
The Red Bulls looked like they were scoring first, as Kemar Lawrence’s shot was kick saved onto the post by Philly GKAndre Blake, before the follow-up attempt flew over the goal.
The Union opened scoring in the 53rd minute, as Haris Medunjanin turned a corner and hit an unstoppable blast. They followed it up with a goal by forward Cory Burke just after the hour mark.
New York didn’t give up, and Bradley Wright-Phillips came off the bench and scored in the 77th minute to cut the visitors’ deficit in half.
