I wonder of Pennsylvania taxpayers know that Penn State coach James Franklin is about to get an extension on his $4.3 million annual salary?

Athletic Director Sandy Barbour said last night that talks continue toward an extension of the six-year deal Franklin signed in 2014.

“Stay tuned, it’s moving along,” Barbour said prior to the first Penn State Coaches Caravan stop. “There’s no pressure or hurry from either Penn State or from Coach Franklin, so I think it’s happening as it’s happening.”

Franklin is entering the fourth year of the contract he signed in 2014. According to the terms of that deal, Franklin is scheduled to make $4.3 million this season.

That does not include a $300,000 retention bonus payable in December and up to $1 million in incentives.

“I’m kind of an old-school guy,” Franklin said. “I believe in the true student-athlete and what this is all about. I’ve never made decisions off of that, but I guess it’s no different from any other industry. The market really demands it. I don’t think any coach got into this for that. But it is crazy, there’s no doubt it.”
