One of the more important contract-related items on the agenda for the Flyers before too long will be extended heart-and-soul winger Wayne Simmonds, who has one year left on his contract.
“Ron Hextall, if you listened to him the other day, he thinks it’s going to be a pretty quiet summer,” said hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman during a Friday evening TV hit on NHL Network. “He’s looking for right-hand D and he will be willing to make a move if he can help get something like that.
“But other than that, I think the biggest question the Flyers have is going to be Wayne Simmonds. He’s one year away from unrestricted free agency. He’s coming off surgery that Hextall said the other day went really well. Wayne Simmonds was hurt all of last year and still scored 24 goals. He’s coming up on 30.
“I wrote about the comparable with him and T.J. Oshie, and when I wrote it I completely forgot that T.J. Oshie and Wayne Simmonds are represented by the same people. So you look at that Oshie deal – eight years, 5.75 – I wonder if that’s what Simmonds is going to kind of take a look at.
“I don’t know if Philly is going to do that, but it worked for Washington and I wonder if Philly is going to consider something like that for Simmonds.”
