The Eagles withstood injuries to Carson Wentz, DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffery and Dallas Goedert, and they still had a chance to squeeze out a win last night in Atlanta.
But it slipped away when Nelson Agholor let a catchable pass and potential touchdown slide through his hands late in the fourth quarter.
So Julio Jones caught a 54-yard go-ahead touchdown pass and the Falcons’ defense made a fourth-down stop to secure Atlanta’s 24-20 win over the Eagles at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
On a 4th-and-8 with 38 seconds left, Wentz completed a seven-yard pass to Zach Ertz, but the tight end couldn’t get the extra yard for the first down.
It was the third straight game between the two teams Jones was involved in the game-winning play — with the Eagles coming out on top the previous two times.
Wentz finished 24 for 43 for 231 yards one touchdown and two interceptions — both by Desmond Trufant.
Wentz left the game in the second quarter because of the concussion protocol but returned a few plays later. Josh McCown was 3 for 5 fo 24 yards while Wentz was in the concussion protocol.
The Eagles hurried Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan three times and sacked him once. But Ryan completed 24 of 43 passes for 320 yards and three TDs — including the 54-yarder to Jones on a 4th-and-3 with 2 minutes and 10 seconds left down by three points.
Goedert and Jeffery both have calf injuries while Jackson suffered a groin injury. None recorded a target.
Defensive tackle Tim Jernigan (foot) and running back Corey Clement (shoulder) also were injured in the loss.
The Eagles return home next Sunday to host the Detroit Lions (1-1) at Lincoln Financial Field.
