This year’s running back class has taken a little bit of a hit as the draft process has worn on, with Florida State’s Dalvin Cook being mentioned as a player who could slide out of the first round, and LSU’s Leonard Fournette’s three-down ability being questioned.
It is still a strong group, but the player to watch could be Eagles fan fave Christian McCaffrey. He not only starred as a running back at Stanford, but was one of the best returners and pass-catchers (at any position) in the country the last two seasons. ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper has continued to move McCaffrey up his Big Board, which now has McCaffrey all the way up at No. 6, even ahead of Fournette.
McCaffrey’s ability as a receiver not just out of the backfield but also in the slot and split wide makes him an ideal matchup weapon in a league that is increasingly pass-heavy, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him go in the top 10. He has been linked in recent mock drafts to the Panthers at No. 8 — including Harris’s most recent effort— but don’t rule him out creeping into the top five, perhaps to the Jaguars at No. 4.
