The Union fell to Atlanta United 3-0 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium last night, and their record is now 9-13-9, good for 36 points, seven out of the playoffs with three games to play.
In other words, Atlanta is going to the postssason in its first MLS season and the Union are going home again!
Atlanta came out of the gates fast in front of their home crowd of 43,006. Atlanta’s offense peppered Union goalkeeper Andre Blake, who was forced to make multiple highlight reel saves in the first half. Blake finished with seven saves on the night.
The home team finally broke through in the 27th minute after rookie Julian Gressel slipped though the Union defense and found the back of the net.
Six minutes later Atlanta struck again; this time, it was their newcomer Josef Martinez. The red hot Venezuelan continued his run of form with his 18th goal of the season. The half ended with Atlanta up two goals.
The home side recorded its third and final goal of the night in the 88th minute, as Jacob Peterson sealed the victory for Atlanta, which remains unbeaten in their last seven contests.
The Union will have a quick turnaround, as they host Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday at Talen Energy Stadium. Kick-off for that contest is set for 1 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN.
